Yet another Tourist Attraction for Belfast for visitors to explore history and find out about years gone by has opened this month- ready for Summer visitors.We love learning about history at Corr’s Corner Hotel and thought we would share this with our guests as part of our Tourist Attractions Focus for the Summer. Somewhere new for you to visit. HMS Caroline is a remaining cruiser from the First World War and has been restored to her 1916 condition. The last surviving participant of the Battle of Jutland, HMS Caroline is now open to the public. “From June 2016, visitors will discover a range of historic spaces including the Captain’s Cabin, Royal Marines Mess, and Seamen’s Wash as well as the very important engine room, sick-bay and galley kitchen. Visitors will explore the importance of the Battle of Jutland and discover what life at sea was like for over three hundred crew who served on board Caroline during 1916.”
“The HMS Caroline Experience
Visitors will be able to explore HMS Caroline and discover an astonishing survivor of World War One that has been in continuous service for over 100 years, many of which were served in Belfast, her home for 90 years.
The visitor experience extends across 3 decks and draws together a mixture of historic restoration, state of the art special effects and hands-on interactive exhibits to bring different eras of Caroline’s colourful history to life.
HMS Caroline In Belfast
In the 1920s HMS Caroline was converted into the floating headquarters for the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in Belfast. Members of the Reserve were able to specialise in many different roles, including Signalman and Wireless Telegraphist. Today, the ‘Signal School’ is a contemporary space which will house hands-on multi-media exhibits where visitors will be able to try their hand at world war one communication methods like signal lanterns, signal flags and Morse code. Communication at sea during the Battle of the Atlantic will be explored and brought up to date with innovative displays and interactive exhibits.
In the Torpedo School, visitors will explore the role of naval weaponry then and now with a range of hands-on tactile displays and activities involving a replicated equipment, models and interactive displays. Visitors will be able to design their own “Dazzle” paint scheme for their ship, explore the insides of a torpedo and learn about the various roles of crew when in Battle.”
